When I lived in Berlin it also tripped me up a lot. Just minding my own business doing nothing in particular and getting verbally attacked by Berliners for no reason. It's hard to go from 0 to 100 from one second to the next without a mental disorder. If a waiter poured wine on me and didn't even apologize I would just leave the restaurant. There's no point in arguing with them or trying to speak to a manager because Germans always think they're right and it's basically impossible for an employer to fire an employee.
I have been living in this city for 1.5 years now. I can't count the times when I was angry about the service personnel, asked to speak to the manager, left bad online reviews, and so on. At some point you start thinking about HOW OFTEN such things occur and you realize that actually, bad service and rude staff is rather the norm than the exception here. Depressing.

A question for those of you who have either moved away from Berlin or are currently making moves towards making that happen... What was the straw that finally broke the camel's back? I'm not sure if German public broadcasters are burying the story or not as I'm no longer in Germany but posting a lone three month old news article isn't exactly proving anything either way. Again, I'm not in Germany so I don't know for sure, but over the last three weeks have radio stations reported more on the German economy or the US government shutdown during their hourly, obligatory news segments? Was the recession a lead story on television at all?
The way the recession in Germany is being reported seems a little strange to me as first they were claiming the data was probably bad (if any official government data is accurate then it's sure as hell the data from tax authorities) and now they're blaming water levels in German rivers. I don't think it's a conspiracy exactly but seems to be a willingness to report extremely flimsy reasoning.
