I knew a couple of people from the Netherlands here in Berlin. They were quite open, nice and friendly. I met them in their first year of living here and all looked very excited and happy. After a year or so, they all decided to leave saying that they always felt miserable, lonely and disappointed. None of them was able to make proper friendships and preferred their own group (mostly Dutch) to anyone.

Unfortunately many people do commit suicide or OD in Berlin and it isn’t reported accurately. But there were so many suicides here I think the city is cursed. I read an article saying there was a flat where 3 tenants committed suicide in a row. I’m not religious, but I feel something weird is going on here, something paranormal

I think Berlin was the suicide capital of the world for many years actually. When I first moved here, I had a sublet in Schöneberg and I slept with the lights on for two months. I kept having the urge to commit suicide. The house was definitely haunted, I started watching dark and scary things on YouTube and I don’t even like horror movies or scary things. I really hated that flat and building. It was so old, it had the old stove in it in the kitchen from before 1900

Anyway my point being I have heard of many deaths here from drugs in my time here, way higher than normal and a friend killed himslef and that really affected me, but it didn’t seem to affect the people around me so much, which was troubling. When I told my German ex that my friend had died, he questioned how it happened firstly without offering Any empathy. It creeps me out now to think of it

When I first moved to Berlin I went for an Sti test, had to lie and said a guy cheated on me so I was aftaid I could have caught something. These Germans are gatekeepers even to your own health. Anyway, I had gotten an HIV test already that year - the doctor asked me if I had sex with any Africans “because they were higher risk for HIV”. I told her I wouldn’t answer the question as it was racist. She told me she had to take some blood, took it and then said “that’s your HIV test”. I felt violated. I told her what she had said was racist and she said “it’s not racist”. I wrote the clinic an email complaining about what she had said (fear mongering) and weeks later I got a letter in the mail (lol) in response to my complaint saying that the doctor was “not racist” and “things are done here differently than in your home country”.
I should have gotten the hint then, after getting that mail, climbing up 5 flights of stairs to an apartment where the creepy neighbour stands behind me and stares at me from the next balcony. But stuff like this doesn’t add up as “German normal” until later

This thread is all true. I used to wonder why official reports by the WHO and other international organizations showed that STI incidence rate in Germany was so low. Then I learned from several people that you basically cannot get a full test done here under any circumstances. The Germans are also the same with covid19 tests. In my tiny one horse town where I am from the the rural US there's a drug store where you can get a free covid19 test without symptoms. Here I recently needed one before traveling for my job and I called 5 doctors and every one of them said I can't get one without symptoms (well, I pay 140 EUR for one on top of the 550 EUR I pay here per month for public insurance). There's a reason the covid19 infection/death rates here are so low. Proportionately Germany has done half the tests done in the UK and about 60% the tests done in the US. Germany freaking sucks in every aspect you look at.

Walked by some workers' union office this morning (can't remember the name). There were pictures on the ground floor with large comics on them. One of them was a mother giving her kids their allowance and the daughter saying "why do I only get 1 eur when my brother gets 2?". The mother answered "Get used to it, that's just how life is" or something. This is the level of sophistication these people think that their constituents possess. The fact that every credible economic analysis has debunked the wage gap and that some studies even show that young women outearn their male counterparts doesn't matter when you have a class of people who want to play victim whenever possible to avoid accepting accountability for their own fortunes. Whenever I hear a German woman complaining about this I just tell her to look up the wage gap between bio Germans and foreign-born residents here. That usually shuts them up.

I mean, all Germans who are expat and live in different regions of the world can speak the local language perfectly? They speak perfect Arabic when they work in Dubai ? What about expat Germans who live in Singapore? Can they speak perfect Chineese? I don't think so. Why is It expectation in Germany to speak "perfect" German?

I have friends who live all around the Europe and they all can get well with everything in English. Some of them can speak the local language up to some degree but most of the time, they only speak English. There is no massive pressure to learn the local language everywhere.
