I think the bes city to live in is ythe one where you have the best friends and family around you, if you have a dysfunctional family, try to get help with mediation with them, work hard to keep close to your family members. Otherwise, big cities will eat you up. What do you do for a living?
I‘m a business/psychology student. I was more thinking of London or Spain (Madrid), also like Vienna. Perhaps California? Just unsure about leaving (“escaping?”). Same with Ai Wei Wei. Will it really be better for me to leave? (My fam is in Berlin). I think so. I just hope the problem is not me but the city. Guess I would be happier at another please, also taking into account I’ve lived 2,5 years in the Netherlands, and 0,5 in Beijing. Risks are it won’t be better upon leave. Hey guys, it’s time to spit again my hate on Berlin. I am a Berliner. I quote my high school’s ethics teacher for a moment: “Berlin is an illness.”. The problem with Berlin is the city lacks motivation. People have no drive to fight for something that’s valuable to them. The end goal is just nice after work evening, perhaps drinks, family. Like there is no larger motivation. It’s difficult to describe this. But life needs commitment. It flourishes when people’s blood gets elevated because they fight for something. An ideal. A better life. A social goal. Whatever. Just hustle. In Berlin everyone is retarded. There are no goals. It’s nihilistic. Existentialiitic. Some like it though. But I hate it. No dynamism. No connection. No social interaction and integration. No drive.
I agree except about the family thing. People here definitely do not value families at all. No family-oriented activities, no family values. Nothing except antiseptic state-sponsored daycare and 300eur a month wired straight from the mother Germany.
Also there are a lot of people with drive in Berlin. Drive to burn cars (happens literally daily), throw rocks at cops and attend all these drug-crazed sex dungeons.
Berlin is cancer for dreams. People here never achieve anything because the entire society treats every member as nothing more than a cog in a machine. Changing careers without returning to school for 4 additional years isn't possible. No one encourages anyone. It's not even a rat race because that would imply trying. It's a bunch of people swirling around the toilet bowl on their way straight to hell.
It's full of hedonsists escaping from their psychotic parents, because of all the history their relatives have been through, they are all mad, from wars, the great depression, wall going up to divide them and living under Marxist communist dictators, the wall coming down, consumed wit guilt about their past and trying to adjust to a capitalist society but having no clue how to do that.
Psychologically, they are a mess, so they escape through sex, drugs, AntiFa, piercings, tattoos, mindless techno 'music', alcohol and defacing people's property with worhless graffiti and burning cars, because they are riddled with envy. Very sad, very sad people indeed.
I've never met a German who actually was trying to rebel against his or her parents and I don't think it's the cultural norm here. If anything, German parents seem to be so utterly aloof, permissive and passive that I don't know what they would rebel against. Rebel against drinking and doing drugs? Rebel against casual sex? Rebel against public nudism? I agree that they're a mess and extremely sad individuals but I think they're trying to do the opposite of escape their parents. I think they long for human warmth, closeness and emotional support.
I’m German and I rebelled exactly for the reasons stated. My parents would never put the hammer down. I always had to ask to be treated like a child. When I moved out at age 17 to go to another country and finish highschool there, they were skeptical but let me go with 2000€/month support. After a couple months I told them to stop giving me money. And that was the end of that. But not the end of me trying to find out why I left. Of course I got trapped in Berlin for a while too. Left asap. fornicate I still hate it so much. But today I know why; I longed for a genuine relationship, one closest friend and ally to make plans and build a joyful healthy family life with. I didnt realise it then, but people in Berlin have no desire to achieve not just that, but really anything at all. Except perhaps maintaining their image as slickest hipster on the block.
