Berlin is probably one of the most gay friendly major cities in the world. Of course not everyone living there will be okay with it, but that's true everywhere. This place is really only useful for letting off steam. There are better forums for more well rounded discussions. Also, there's one or a few far right nut jobs that post a lot on here for some reason, they may not even live in Berlin.

It's all smoke and mirrors. In Germany there are 4x more hate crimes that in the US per year. A gay man was murdered a couple of weeks ago in one of the parks here and the media doesn't even talk about it. Gays are beaten up in the streets here every day but the media doesn't talk about it. Don't move here if you want to be openly gay.
I feel bad for some refugees. Many young male refugees go to Tiergarten to prostitute themselves in order to survive because they don't get any help from the state. If they went back to middle east, they would be killed. So they have to take old Germans for 10-30 euros in dirty public bathrooms. This is devestating existence.

There's a huge shadow population of older gay men in Berlin that would surprise you. The kind of gays who are completely indiscriminate about who they sleep with. Real degenerates. Once a few years ago I took a shortcut through Volkspark Friedrichshain at night - huge mistake. Massive amount of creeps congregating near that Spanish soldier statue. Luckily it was dark so I could barely see them. Googled it and saw it's some popular cruising spot - the degenerates also had threads on their webpage about refugee prostitutes. And of course the police know all this and does nothing.
It's a sad situation all around. If Merkel did not invite the 3rd world and if the EU had control of it's borders, there would still be refugees and migrants, but a far more manageable number. Probably would have more genuine refugees as well. They would have been screened, legally allowed to stay and receiving assistance to get back on their feet in education or work. But the sheer number of migrants, and how Germany can't keep track of them, is the reason for this kind of desperation. And it won't get any better any time soon, since more and more migrants keep coming, all of them promised by traffickers that Germany is the land of milk and honey.
If you are an opportunist, not a "refugee", you get what you deserve for jumping ahead in the line. There are plenty of countries between here and Syria, if you are a real "refugee", why would you come so far. Trust me, they are mostly opportunists, who want to bring the worst of their Muslim culture here. Hamburg is full of the same no-culture, downtrodden plebs that make Berlin miserable. Complete with excesses in public consumption on the Raperbahn. There's just a slightly larger number number of people who are financially well off (but just as morally bankrupt). Oh and the rents are higher.
completely wrong post before. I left berlin for..hamburg. Entire e new world and society. Sure the reperbhan is messy and trashy but is there and stays there. City is fat butt rich, with lots of companies, international, where everybody works for a price. In berlin i was desperate to find a paid job, in hamburg i had to choose on which company. hamburg is expansive, so the lifestyle here. no lazy butt turists. no artists shit. If only i would have made this choice earlier.
May want to consider Munich as well. One of the strongest economies in Germany and has a much different vibe, though more conservative. The housing situation there may be a bit of an issue though since it's a popular city that was already at capacity, unlike Berlin, which was well below capacity before interest in it started to climb 20 years ago to today.
My advice, is to learn German fluently or go somewhere that speaks the languages you are fluent in. Hamburg is much better, also Koln, and the degenerate loser stay in one area, they don't pollute the whole city. More down to earth and real. If your gay/lesbian/trans/ man-hating Feminist, "refugee", Turkish, crappy-artist or a tourist, maybe all of the above :o))) this place is a paradise for getting lost into your own insulated world. When you say to yourself “you want leave berlin”, it is time then to leave. Do not wait years to repeat yourself the same thing over and over again. I have done this mistake for years, being chained to the city this way. My job situation was a disaster, I was feeling the city like a literary jail. You never have the chance or the push to leave it cause you have the (insane) feeling that Berlin feeds you eith everything you need, fun, party, social life, friends, “freedom”. AH..yes ..Social life if what ,often, keep you stuck in there, you keep on saying yourself “I have so many friends” and this justifies all the rest downgrading of your miserable life in Neukoln.
“Freedom” is the second very well >>marketed>> word by blogs, facebook, media. “in berlin you are free to be what you want to be”. On the surface yes, you can wear clown pants and go out with the pigiama. But there is a misinterpretation on what freedom really is. It is being able to redirect your life as you want, have the lifestyle you want, live where you want, buy an house, have a car, and go on holiday when you want.
When you are paid 1300 euros by a pooping startup or are a so called “artist” with social help or harz4 ; what type of freedom you experience with 800 euros a month? What happens then? You keep on going with the “freedom” . I know people in their 50s, enjoying the poverty, the loneliness and live in a shared flat. It is all so perverse, it brainwashes you in a way. I was proceeding straight on this way as well, luckily for a chance I made it out, it took a few days to look back and being so happy of having left all this behind.

I've been to concerts, parks and busy streets in summer and just never enjoyed it. When you go to a bakery or want to buy strawberries on one of those strawberry-shaped booths, there's ALWAYS a middle-aged, worn-out and miserable looking woman in there with >:C face, being rude and unfriendly, not saying hello and/or bye, and ready to spit some rude bs into your face at every opportunity. fornicate Berliner Schnauze. It's rude and it sucks to be proud of this bs.
