Went drinking last night at one of those "America-themed diners" in Berlin. It's a big chain so I won't mention the name. I was wearing a Make America Great Again baseball cap I bought a while back when I was back home visiting. The waiters refused to take my order and told me to leave. I stood my ground and refused, but after about 45 minutes of just sitting there being eyed angrily by everyone in the restaurant I got annoyed and left.
Are they allowed to refuse to serve me just because they disagree with my political opinions? Is there any legal recourse for me? Would filing a police report do any good?

DHL is the most worthless company on earth. Sent two packages a few weeks back, tracking never updated so I filed a complaint so they would investigate. But the lazy bastards never even replied. 50eur in shipping costs alone wasted. Trash company.
Same here. Always send it through D Post, not DHL, through the normal post, 2-3 days to the USA, with DHL the 1st one got lost, no refund, no help, no nothing, the second one got lost, and the with normal mail, bingo.

Sad when you start a new job that basically could be performed by a monkey and realize all of your colleagues have master's degrees (or higher). People in this city don't study to get good jobs. The study because 95% of jobs in this city are complete trash, and you need a PhD just to do anything that would be considered a normal job in another city.
I showed up fresh from getting my PhD, and it still took many months of job hunting and rejection before I got something. I was focusing on tech startups, but apparently they don't consider years of independent scientific research, writing and programming as "relevant experience". I might have kept trying, if the hiring managers who did deign to interview me hadn't been such supercilious c*nts, and if they hadn't so often demanded that I complete a "challenge", essentially involving doing a bit of work for the company for nothing. Instead I shifted focus to more "traditional" companies, and (with a hefty dose of luck) finally found a good job. Many of my colleagues there are refugees from the cancerous Berlin startup scene.
After having some years of experience in a multinational company and a successful startup, I was offered a role in a startup in Berlin and I took it. All agreements were done remotely and all the sweet talk. Came here and found myself in a personal crisis. No one helped me to do anything for my transition, not even translate the documents I need. In between crying in the shower cursing myself for this decision, I eventually worked my ways around and settled, but it's not even the most frustrating part: Apparently, I am supposed to forget everything I know since the day I was born- because they know better anyway. Even if I have the experience & ideas, I am not worth nothing because I entered to soon their "empire". I am doing the job of a monkey and I am bossed around for it. This transition took all my joy, my enthusiasm, I hate people now & I spend most of my time sleeping and being bitter...
I can absolutely relate to that. During my last job in a design studio, I was pretty amazed that they didn't use all the very useful and BASIC functions of the CAD software, like PAGE LAYOUT ( haha - really primitive in fact) so I wanted of course to use it for my project to save time, however it was explained to me, that I am the one who should adapt to the existing RULES. So they rather prefered to waste their time and resources and be in charge, than to adapt to something new and more effective. Such blockheads, omg, it's unbelievable, not to mention about the level of creativity ...They probably also try to put you down so that they can use this argument to pay you less than they should. It's a strategy, don't let yourself intimidated. Try not to become too bitter, and search for something new maybe outside Berlin.
A change in someone's life like change of country/job/culture that is quite intense and people can actually bury themselves in long, f*cked up depressions. That's the problem with Berlin. There is no empathy around and people couldn't care less about others, or well... just to mock them, undermine them of simply being arrogant pricks...

I really miss random conversations with strangers. The ones where the other party isnt begging for money, asking for a cigarette, trying to sell a newspaper, autistically hitting on me, drunkenly harassing me. I miss decent human beings doing things normal people do because they arent degenerates. I hate this city even more than I hate this country.
No one in Berlin will compliment you, help you or give you support in any way. It is a struggle for them to say please or thank you. Another thing that bugs me about them is how they are all know-it-alls.
For example, if you ask them a question and they don't know, they just "I don't know", whereas in more friendly places it's normal for people to say something like, I don't know, but maybe if you ..." And offer to help you find a way to get your need met.

As a dog owner I always have such random and very nice conversations.
Some guys at the university wearing "refugees welcome" t shirt happened to be pretty hostile towards non german colleagues, in fact they pretty much didn't exist and were excluded or ignored from group conversations. What a fraud!

Berlin is probably one of the most gay friendly major cities in the world. Of course not everyone living there will be okay with it, but that's true everywhere. This place is really only useful for letting off steam. There are better forums for more well rounded discussions. Also, there's one or a few far right nut jobs that post a lot on here for some reason, they may not even live in Berlin.

It's all smoke and mirrors. In Germany there are 4x more hate crimes that in the US per year. A gay man was murdered a couple of weeks ago in one of the parks here and the media doesn't even talk about it. Gays are beaten up in the streets here every day but the media doesn't talk about it. I feel bad for some refugees. Many young male refugees go to Tiergarten to prostitute themselves in order to survive because they don't get any help from the state. If they went back to middle east, they would be killed. So they have to take old Germans for 10-30 euros in dirty public bathrooms. This is devestating existence.

There's a huge shadow population of older gay men in Berlin that would surprise you. The kind of gays who are completely indiscriminate about who they sleep with. Real degenerates. Once a few years ago I took a shortcut through Volkspark Friedrichshain at night - huge mistake. Massive amount of creeps congregating near that Spanish soldier statue. Luckily it was dark so I could barely see them. Googled it and saw it's some popular cruising spot - the degenerates also had threads on their webpage about refugee prostitutes. And of course the police know all this and does nothing.
It's a sad situation all around. If Merkel did not invite the 3rd world and if the EU had control of it's borders, there would still be refugees and migrants, but a far more manageable number. Probably would have more genuine refugees as well. They would have been screened, legally allowed to stay and receiving assistance to get back on their feet in education or work. But the sheer number of migrants, and how Germany can't keep track of them, is the reason for this kind of desperation. And it won't get any better any time soon, since more and more migrants keep coming, all of them promised by traffickers that Germany is the land of milk and honey.
If you are an opportunist, not a "refugee", you get what you deserve for jumping ahead in the line. There are plenty of countries between here and Syria, if you are a real "refugee", why would you come so far. Hamburg is full of the same no-culture, downtrodden plebs that make Berlin miserable. Complete with excesses in public consumption on the Raperbahn. There's just a slightly larger number number of people who are financially well off (but just as morally bankrupt). Oh and the rents are higher.
completely wrong post before. I left berlin for..hamburg. Entire e new world and society. Sure the reperbhan is messy and trashy but is there and stays there. City is fat butt rich, with lots of companies, international, where everybody works for a price. In berlin i was desperate to find a paid job, in hamburg i had to choose on which company. hamburg is expansive, so the lifestyle here. no lazy butt turists. no artists shit. If only i would have made this choice earlier.
May want to consider Munich as well. One of the strongest economies in Germany and has a much different vibe, though more conservative. The housing situation there may be a bit of an issue though since it's a popular city that was already at capacity, unlike Berlin, which was well below capacity before interest in it started to climb 20 years ago to today.
My advice, is to learn German fluently or go somewhere that speaks the languages you are fluent in. Hamburg is much better, also Koln, and the degenerate loser stay in one area, they don't pollute the whole city. More down to earth and real. If your gay/lesbian/trans/ man-hating Feminist, "refugee", Turkish, crappy-artist or a tourist, maybe all of the above :o))) this place is a paradise for getting lost into your own insulated world. Let them have it.
When you say to yourself “you want leave berlin”, it is time then to leave. Do not wait years to repeat yourself the same thing over and over again. I have done this mistake for years, being chained to the city this way. My job situation was a disaster, I was feeling the city like a literary jail. You never have the chance or the push to leave it cause you have the (insane) feeling that Berlin feeds you eith everything you need, fun, party, social life, friends, “freedom”. AH..yes ..Social life if what ,often, keep you stuck in there, you keep on saying yourself “I have so many friends” and this justifies all the rest downgrading of your miserable life in Neukoln.
“Freedom” is the second very well >>marketed>> word by blogs, facebook, media. “in berlin you are free to be what you want to be”. On the surface yes, you can wear clown pants and go out with the pigiama. But there is a misinterpretation on what freedom really is. It is being able to redirect your life as you want, have the lifestyle you want, live where you want, buy an house, have a car, and go on holiday when you want.
When you are paid 1300 euros by a pooping startup or are a so called “artist” with social help or harz4 ; what type of freedom you experience with 800 euros a month? What happens then? You keep on going with the “freedom” . I know people in their 50s, enjoying the poverty, the loneliness and live in a shared flat. It is all so perverse, it brainwashes you in a way. I was proceeding straight on this way as well, luckily for a chance I made it out, it took a few days to look back and being so happy of having left all this behind.

Wish I could upvote this several times. Especially the last paragraph. It's so true. What freedom is it? Being stuck in this shithole, surrounded by miserable faces, mentally deranged people who think they're alone in the world, and hipster scum. Oh great, there are SO MANY possibilities here - yeah. Good luck making friends there or even having a good time. The atmosphere everywhere, even when people are having a good time, is always weirdly hostile. I've been to concerts, parks and busy streets in summer and just never enjoyed it. Places like Alexanderplatz I avoid because you can't sit there for 5 minutes without idiots, bums, assholes and scum approaching you, begging for something or just talking poop to you. When you go to a bakery or want to buy strawberries on one of those strawberry-shaped booths, there's ALWAYS a middle-aged, worn-out and miserable looking woman in there with >:C face, being rude and unfriendly, not saying hello and/or bye, and ready to spit some rude bs into your face at every opportunity. fornicate Berliner Schnauze. It's rude and it sucks to be proud of this bs.
And the worst is that it changes you, too. Maybe I am also already one of those miserable looking and unfriendly assholes because it gets so tiring to only get approached with poop that it's easier to be rude, and to signal to everybody that they shouldn't dare to approach you, especially when you use public transportation (which is too expensive if you ask me, especially for the pooping service they offer, always crowded, never on time, filled with smelly, annoying bums, retards and beggars)
