Wow - even high profile artists think berlin sucks ass...which it does....a hellhole.....
yes Iam a high profile artist and off the record most of my non german high profile artists think the same. Problem is they are too weak minded worried that they will fall out of the media circus and use the Berlin artist poop to fool the dickheads from boring places in europe to make cash from them. Berlin is a boring ugly cold, idiot reason being why all of the very top Artists and Djs stay in America when they can or London, those that have been already making top dollar for a while before the social media hype. Dont get me wrong Berlin was once an ok place to go out and party and live there for cheap, thats all gone, there arent any real decent cheap places to live and the clubs most of the time are the same as any other city ive been too, and the Art scene is really Crap for a Capital so called Major European city its terrible. So go for 3 months in the summer, and make sure you have a return ticket to somewhere else.
Thing is if you broke down the so called scene down and those so called people running the music scene were sent back home to their pooping small towns in europe or back home to Israel, or other non important places they would be revealed to be the insignificant talentless trouble causing turds they are.
People really should post this page more on their facebook pages to give it a bigger audience. If i wasnt a high profile artist i would happily do it.
besides, a bigger audience =/= good/better. what's wrong with it the way it is now? i think the audience will eventually grow naturally when people search for this kind of stuff. why the rush? and no offense, but it really feels like this typical german capitalist thought of "more growth, more efficiency". don't you think this site's audience chooses itself?
Here's the truth about Berlin, which is a sick clown show of a city:
1. Cost of living being low... Yeah, might be lower than other cities, but the wages are really low, unemployment is very high. The city lives off of tourism but at the same time hates tourists. Natives still have that East German mentality. Be prepared to meet level 10/10 tools such as Marxist "expats" who complain about gentrification as if they somehow have native rights to Berlin or something.
2. Germans will call you a foreigner if you're brown, even if you were actually born and raised in Berlin. Germans invite hoards of immigrants to their country, then like to complain about it or call 2nd 3rd generation children of migrants "foreigners" This is the German way of being multicultural. This is why immigrants do not integrate. There are also probably too many of them for them to really "integrate". More like take over. Also, you can't speak like this in Germany, everyone is paranoid about stating the obvious because it might sound "racist". The German psyche is a radical combination of extreme xenophobia and extreme white guilt/nazi guilt.
3. At the same time, yes it's nice to have so much falafel and doner etc to eat (which btw, also gets boring) but large parts of Berlin will look and feel like Bagdad. Lots of thirsty ME & North African EVERYWHERE who have a staring problem. If you're female you have to constantly avoid accidentally looking at them, because they may take it as a sign of interest. Looks like a gender imbalance sometimes.
4. Really lame party scene. Believe me. Cheesy techno clubs with poop music, boring butt people, and most of the bars are mind numbingly boring. People go out and just sit around smoking and drinking, having no facial expressions, looking like a monotonous robot and hardly even smiling. few people are laughing having a good time or dancing. Most boring nightlife I've ever seen. Yes they do have some cool looking places but the people are so boring. Go to a few bars and clubs and you'll be thinking the same thing.
5. poop arts scene. Just a lot of really bad art everywhere, goofy people who enjoy the smell of their own farts because they cobble together some type of creative existence in Berlin, lots of pretentious tools.
6. poop startup scene. Lots of Macbook laptop toting techie Spock hipsters everywhere. Less annoying then the artsy types but the techie Spocks will get on your nerves as well.
7. It's difficult to meet anyone in Berlin who is laid back, funny, easy to talk to, warm and not boring, without a weird complex and not pretentious. If you do they're probably a tourist or haven't been in Berlin long.
8. Deranged homeless, beggars etc everywhere. You're going to encounter at least a dozen of them as soon as you step out. They're just part of berlin's gritty "sexy but poor" ambiance I guess, right up there with the smell of piss permeating everywhere, poop graffiti everywhere, etc. Berlin is a sick clown show.
9. I could write more but you get the idea.
Berlin techies aren't really techies. Most tech meetings never come back to Berlin. Soundcloud loses more than 30M every year and the best talent that arrives to the city leaves in 1 year or less. I just wanted to weigh in in that matter. The rest is true of course.

Ha,Ha.I am lovin these latest posts.I just had a German friend visit me in my part of the world.Took him around town,took him to some fine Asian restaurants(Not that garbage they serve in Berlin..This was REAL multi cultural food)Then off to some top quality INTERNATIONAL art exhibitions(No German artists included).All he did was sulk,sulk sulk.But then he found something to make him happy.We visited my parents in their retirement village.A terrific community of old folk enjoying themselves in a fantastic complex. All he could say was that the door knobs were bad quality!! And this cheered him up! WHO THE fornicate NOTICES DOORKNOBS?...A GERMAN. fornicate I was glad when he broken off back to Berlin..where old people have to collect bottles from rubbish bins because nobody gives a fornicate for the poor souls.You gotta laugh or you wont stop crying..Cheers.xx
Today I was at the bakery and the person in charge asked me "today we have freshly baked doughnuts, would you like a Berliner?" Awful memories came back to me and my face showed fear so much that the cleric asked me "are you ok?" "Yes, I'm fine" I replied. while flashbacks of the city and memories of me venting on this website came back to me. freaking Berlin, it gave me PTSD.

(I left 3yrs ago) Leave it to a Berliner to not understand the very simple concepts of 'Healthy Venting', 'Camaraderie', 'Commonality' or "EXPRESSION". Some of us need more than Vegan Powered Bicycles and crap Parks to feel apart of something. Isnt there a patch of grass in Grunewald calling you back home to the Shire?
Is it possible to find people that do not obsessively talk about techno parties, fake art (words like performance, installations etc make me mad) and other useless cr.ap? I could understand teenagers, but for fuck's sake i see people OVER 30 and 40 talking about the cool dj that is playing at BERGHAIN and they cannot miss.. I don't remember the last time I actually had real, genuine fun in this country. It feels like the only way people have fun here is by getting drunk, talking about politics (??? if masochism counts I guess?) or just making fun of each other and being nasty in general. They're like bitterness personified. And if you're not, don't you even dare showing the slightest hint of happiness. They'll go mad crushing you until you're just like them.
So true. Have you ever heard the word "schadenfreude"? This work exists only in german. Guess what it means? Basically, twisted/perverse/harm joy that derives from seeing others in pain. This is what is funny to them: people's suffering.
Those pricks have no sense of humor, they have no joy in them. They are in competition for anything and everything. They exist, they don't live. They don't have the most basic human qualities there are.
Those people make me sick to the stomach. I was such a happy person before moving to this hell hole, now I'm just sad and depressed.
Preaching to the choir on that one. I have never come across people who enjoy others' suffering so extremely anywhere else, save for Italy. Then again, I didn't get around too much there, but from what I experienced they had the same "European Assholes" syndrome. Like. Can't we just enjoy ourselves without comparing everyone to everything? One really shouldn't be AFRAID of showing positive emotion, or emotion in general. Christ.
We all know that house and it's antecedents stemmed from minority groups — African Americans, Puerto Ricans, homosexuals — and were, eventually, co-opted by white heterosexuals. It is sad to see that in Berlin and in many other cities in Germany house has become a snob (in the sense that only certain partygoers are welcome), segregated and xenophobic experience. The music scene thrived when Berlin when the city opened its doors back in the 90s to renegades from all over the world but today it's just sad to see that only welcomes "Berliners". I can tell you that because I've been long enough in the music biz to know what happened here and honestly I don't like what happened to the city. RIP Berlin. 1900-1999
oh and by the way I shared this on a forum about the city music scene and all I got was a link to this site plus some hate replies. Please share your music scene experiences in places like Reddit because others have similar concerns but they don't voice their concerns loud enough for fear of Berlin trolls.
Very true Berlin is done and poor bored people give up everything from far off places like australia and america to go to berlin thinking its a cultural paradise with cheap accomodation and open minded people ?. Occasionally you go to a smaller electronic music cub and its cool like Henrietta house, everyones welcomed in, the atmosphere, multiple rooms and music is all good. Forget BERGHAIN ITS ALL FUCKYNG HYPE NOW. Its really nothing special at all. I Would want the place to be full of all sorts of people but it isnt ?. Where are the Drag queens, the cool Gays, The Cool Black people and famous artists, nowhere to be seen the times I Have actually Dj´d there.

i don't understand how people think the city is safe. I've been attacked and mugged multiple times growing up here and put into terrifying situations. Yet everyone i know talks about how safe Berlin is compared to other cities, maybe i just had bad luck.
You know, I keep coming back to this site, even after having left Berlin almost one year ago. I felt so much lighter after getting rid of everything back there. I moved to another city for college, still in Germany, but a really really small town, where people are nicer in comparison. This may be a little off topic, since it isn't really about Berlin, so apologies beforehand. I simply don't know where else to share this, and I am really fond of this website. And before I say anything else, I want to add that I find myself more sensitive and initially light-hearted than the average of all the people I've met in Germany. Here's the deal: It *still* sucks here. What sucks isn't the place, it's absolutely pretty where I live now, but a realization I made a while ago: the whole "German mentality" is so backwards, I find it hard to grasp it. I've grown up in a mostly warm-hearted environment, and the amount of cynicism and snappiness of these people won't cease to shock me. That's right. I grew up in Berlin, of all places - you'd think I grew into the whole "fuck it" mentality, but I have never been able to wrap my head around how a people could be so miserable to the core. Granted, there are quite a bit of "Großstädter" in this city too, but even when you think you are somewhat well-acquainted with people, out-of-freaking-nowhere they toss at you something like "Why are you talking about this?" or "I do not care." or they flat-out tell you to stop talking. How tactless, emotionally unintelligent and unempathetic do you have to be? They call it "being honest," and I can follow that sentiment, but the virtue of all honesty in the world doesn't mean anything when you forget to be polite about it. Here's another shocker: These are *psychology* students that I've heard these phrases from. ... I've been sitting at home basically the entirety of my vacation, trying to understand the heavy mental malfunctioning that is present in this society. Not surprisingly, it's been impossible for me to make any "friends" at all (at which point I don't even think I want to be friends with these kinds of people that are just purely emotionally exhausting). Really, I feel like I've been withering away from lack of enjoyable social interaction for years by now. You just cannot be a cheerful, light-hearted person here without fearing to be eaten alive. This country, so far, has been nothing more than a giant fish tank full of piranhas and sharks, trimmed for efficiency. Where is the joy? Where are the people I can have fun with, without having to fear they'll turn my emotions into burdens? Everyone is just too cool for everything here. The hostility constantly lingering in the air is disturbing. I really have to say, I feel so delighted when I get the chance to travel, I feel like in just about any other country, you can dare to be yourself, with all its flaws and goofiness, all your childish hobbies and bizarre interests, people are a lot more accepting. That's just adding my two (or twenty) cents here. Thank you a lot if you read through all this, and I wish all of you the best - preferably out of this place. As for the admins: I cannot thank you enough for this website. It really is a blessing.

I keep trying to understand why they are like this, I'm pretty sure I will never be able to figure this out. They get so defensive when you try to have a conversation about the "german mentality" with them.
This place is doomed. I don't believe those people will ever change, they are only getting worse.
I get your point, before Berlin I used to live in Munich and most things said in this website can be related to Munich as well you only have to change "broke artists" to "pegida lunatics". Nothing really changes across Germany, I still have to find that beautiful German city full of culture, art and sophisticated people. I recently travelled to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. And both places feel like 40 years into the future when you compare it to German cities. There are great places in Europe, true, but I truly believe that none of them is in Germany.
Thanks a lot you guys. I can't even explain how it helps simply knowing people made similar experiences. I am literally only staying here to finish my degree and I will definitely get the hell out of here asap. If I'm grateful for one thing it's that, out of necessity, my English has become decent enough that it offers me international options, because I sure as hell won't intend to spend my next 30 years among these miserable people. Literally. That's currently my goal in life: To move out of Germany and avoid anything German like the plague.
Whoever keeps spreading the hype about Berlin should be jailed for fraud....
