Thyre terrific. Always considdering themselves as the only person "good" and important, then treating others icecoldly from above like shit. Realy asocially. But its always this. Sometimes theyre even harassing, caus they think theyre the only kind of person who has a right to live and far more, a right to live in berlin.
Some of these womans make me wonder. They are mother, but too thin? They are mother, but looking like a wanna be model? Its inhuman. Some of these women have such certian facial expression. I dont know what to read from that. It gives me the chills.

This site + spending a couple of months in Berlin is making me reconsider a longer move there. I decided to leave while I had the chance.
I thought I was being paranoid when I was there, but I felt a low-key racism. I am female and non Western European looking, I can pass as South American, Turkish, Israeli, etc. I didn’t encounter any problems but I am almost certain it was racism, because when I opened my mouth, and they knew I was an English speaking person instead of being a dirty dark foreigner, they were more friendly. And apparently there is xenophobia against English speaking people too and “tourists” (how am I a tourist if I have a visa and am paying German taxes…), etc. Xenophobia on a level I have not encountered before. Again as I said, at the time I thought perhaps I was being paranoid but now I am sure it is racism and xenophobia. This is in contrast to major world cities I have lived in, that had all different races, nationalities, languages and accents. Berlin seems like a xenophobic, racist village in comparison.
Having lived in big cities before, I am also used to an aggressive pace of life, but in Berlin I felt that it was not so much about being rushed, but that people are just mean and rude. And the people seem proud to be rude and mean spirited, too. They also seem proud of their xenophobia and racism. They hide it under the guise of resisting gentrification, but it’s just an excuse. Their pride regarding their hatred of tourists is also very ugly and ignorant. Maybe Berlin wouldn’t be so poor and such a dump if tourism improved the economy? But don’t you ever dare say something like that out loud in Berlin… the only thing you’re allowed to do is complain about gentrification, rising rents, talk about the latest bar/whatever, act like a pseudo intellectual (how are you so informed about politics or anything in the world when you are drunk/high every other night? please tell me), pretend to be a too cool for school special snowflake. The people are so pretentious it’s incredible.
The average person in Berlin seems to be a loser or layabout, at best a starving artist, who is in Berlin because of the cheap cost of living. A lot of people seem to be lazy and unmotivated to do better with their lives. All they care about is their cheap rent and getting drunk/high every other night.
There is also no outdoors to speak of. The parks are so ugly and sad. I don’t understand how people bring children into these parks. The architecture/streets are ugly and depressing, there is just a lot of ugliness everywhere. I can accept this ugliness in the physical environment, but not the racism, xenophobia and narrow-mindedness in the people. Maybe if I came from some small town somewhere, I would not know better and I would have been amazed by Berlin. But I have lived in big cities before and Berlin is an ugly, racist, xenophobic dirty village in comparison.
Yes, Berlin is (still) cheap. Yes, you can still get more for your money than you would elsewhere. However, the economy is terrible, the people are terrible, and I would advise that you move to a city with a better economy and less depressing, intolerable people. Yes you may have to live farther out from the city centre, you may have to commute longer, you may have to have flatmates, but at least you are not surrounded by rude, xenophobic, pretentious people, and at least you have better prospects/opportunities in life when you don’t live in a squalid dump of a city. It seems like the longer people stay in Berlin, the more of a loser/typical berliner they become, and the more stuck they are.
Dear Mila, you would be surprised of the racism of this kind you might meet in Vienna, in Munich, in Nice etc. - I am very slightly middle eastern looking, I pass as Spanish or Italian or Greek most of the time, because I m quite european from my looks I guess. But I dont really get the racist looks here I got in e.g. Nice. It´s sad to hear that you have this experience, and I hope that you are misinterpreting it. I really hope that no other people share this experience with you.
Besides that, I m a single man, just turned 40. I m not ugly, I dont look old. I cant find any woman showing interest in me. Is this a Berlin thing ?
It's hard if not impossible to find emotionally mature people in their 20s - 30s (and even 40s I'm guessing) in this city. If you can't find people with their emotional baggage checked, you hardly will be able to engage in any kind of relationship. This applies to both males and females alike.
I wonder how many of the people who complain here (and it´s not like I dont understnad them) exaggerate or have simply not tried to change district or environment within the city. I mean OK my perception might be skewed since I havent left the city for about a year now due to monetarian reasons (yes, I feel you there) but... I can smile. I smile a lot. Also, I dont think that Berlin women are ugly. Or even german women. Also, I swear sometimes. I tell people to f* off. Pretty much every day actually. One time I left a bar, like this: I was joking and suddenly my interlocutor went dead-serious and didnt say a word. And I was like "Did something happen? What´s the matter with you" -"Oh no it´s just I prefer to listen to the song playing right now rather than to listen to stupid jokes" -"You know what ? F* you. Just f* you, classless rude idiot" - this is how I live here. And I confront people. It´s hard to think that you cant get by here without just telling them "Hey. Youre a rude idiot". - Do it. Just do it and things might change ;)
Well, dear Anonymous - yes, being broke might have something to do with Berlin. But confronting people who are rude with their own rudeness but telling them to simply f* off (I dont do that usually you know) is something I would do in any other environment. And yes that´s okay. It is also okay to call a Nazi a Nazi. It is ok to call a rude illegitimate child a rude bastard. And just by the same logic it is ok to tell somebody who rudely told you to f* off for no reason, well: to f* off. If you have a problem with that, then that´s not Berlin´s fault. Thanks.

Left Berlin a year ago - still plagued by memories of how horrific that city is...would rather be in jail than return...it gets worse and worse and there are no jobs or opportunities and the ppl are rubbish. Only happy people are international drunk students. My tip: AVOID.
And I forgot to mention they have the crappiest airport in the world (what the fornicate is this Tegel shit???) with german employees who can barely speak english... They have so many foreigners in that pooping city who can speak several languages, why don't they hire them?
Three years ago i left Tegel for what I thought was the last time. My return ticket said Berlin Brandenburg International airport for a few weeks later. I returned to Tegel... lol. I have visited BBI, very nice looking ghost town. Embarrassment of Germany... noone even talks about it anymore
I hate Berlin from the bottom of my heart and the Berliners as well.
The city is simply ugly, charmless, not cosy, nor pretty, the only positive thing is the public transport running all night during the weekend... but then you need to have somewhere to go.
As for the people, omg, I visited several capital or main cities of different countries, but i've never met by far worse than Berliners (i wrote Berliners, but I could also have refered to people living in Leipzig, Dresden, ...). They are so rude, agressive, narrow minded, rigid, cold, arrogant AND racist/xenophobic. Jeez, those people make sick. I always get a bit jaded in the late spring because the women start wearing less clothes and body wise, they can be nice to look at at times... it is mostly the hard emotionless and ugly faces that make me cringe... this is all we see in the 9 month winter unfortunately.
