I'm (unhappily) married to a German & have lived here for over 6 years and in that time have tried everything possible to fit-in, make friends and join the community. Breaking through the barrier of xenophobia & rudeness in Germany is nearly impossible. I have blonde hair, blue eyes and speak German but as soon as I smile & open my mouth to speak with my Canadian accent I am shut down & treated rudely or simply ignored.Seriously, I have adults ask me a question and when I start to answer literally turn their back to me & ask someone else. One of the most shocking things I've been told was by my kiddo's pre-school teacher on the first day when I dropped her off.

She: "where are you from"
Me: I'm Canadian
She: "That's not too bad, at least you're not Turkish."

Of course this exchange was in German and in front of other parents who were looking at me with pity & nodding their heads in agreement. WHAT?

Everyday is another adventure in bizarre rudeness here and I look forward to the day when I can eventually figure out a way to leave.

the worst thing i find is that they literally are not "being rude" they just have, and expect, no manners, they probably think they're being nice. If I wasn't so busy feeling sorry for myself, I'd feel sorry for them

Dude, I don't know what to tell you. I have been Nine years here in a similar situation. Even worked hard to get rid of my accented German but still the little Grammar errors or the tell tale minor incorrect usage and I am shunned. Even splitting up with the nasty German wife only made life worse as she controls all and participates in blatant parental alienation as often as she can. F'in hate this place, want to take my lovely little girl and run before she becomes the same as the rest of them.

Yup, you nailed the thing that bothered me the most while I lived there. Berliners' (and Germans' in general) complete lack of awareness of manners and social sensitivity. I still have this scene in my head during the the carnival when people approached a bunch of asians on the street and started yelling in their faces "Yao kun pow ping pong honda kawasaki". And in their heads they were being playful and not utterly offensive. I witnessed so many stories like that in so little time there that makes me feel glad of not being there anymore.

Oh, about the so-called "carnival" a few days ago...I was walking down the street in Kreuzberg and a bunch of hipster scum laughingly yelled "NIGGER" when I walked towards the U-Bahn. I should have kicked their ass. I'm sorry I didn't, they would have deserved it. That's *their* idea of being funny and humorous, I suppose...

My first impression about Berlin was so: "HOW can this boring, grey, ugly idiot be called the capital?" HOW F****** CAN IT BE? The capital of boredom? The second capital of Turkey? The capital of absolutely disgusting architecture and the same women? Maybe. But definitely not the capital of european land. Just compare this pathetic village to other european capitals, just like Paris, London, Madrid, Rome or even Moscow / Saint-Petersburg. Worst city in the world, and i'm pity for those people, who are forced to live here.

But to be honest it's not all of Berlin- mostly the Eastern part! Charlottenburg is quite different...

Actually, Charlottenburg just doesn't stink AS BAD as Lichtenberg, that's all. The whole city is a swamp full of passive-aggressive, jealous, lazy, cynical, arrogant, racist buffoons incapable of organizing anything, incapable of producing anything meaningful (art-wise, and yet many of them call themselves "artists"). The people here are stuck in a rut and have found ways to enjoy being useless and counterproductive--such as pulling down anyone who wishes to be anything else other than a bum marking time for his own death.

I agree with the toilet statement. I have just spent 5days there while traveling throughout Europe and Berlin is a mess. It appears to be a dumping ground and the only cleaners are the tramps that get cash back for the bottles they collect. There are some good sculptures about but are defaced by teams of taggers who believe their work is an expression of something cool and hip. It's not hip, it's as crap and the streets you spray.

I really hate it when I have pneumonia, and my new doctor gives me a prescription for what turns out to be 20 euros worth of flower extract, or when I had that spinal injury that got me sent to a specialist who believed in the power of rocks left soaking in water overnight. I hate when my german ex-wife insists on taking our 4 year old to an ear "doctor" who has been telling her that the boy's chronic ear troubles can be remedied by eating dinner no later than 5 o'clock. How can one avoid these morons? It seems there's no regulatory system in place.

I wouldn't say that con artists and quacks are better than pharmaceutical corruption. In fact, they owe their success to the big bad pharmaceutical industry and the bad press it gets. I just have a problem finding real doctors.

It's not about "butt kissing" at all but instead being treated with the common human decency & general politeness that is found in the bulk of civilized societies throughout the world. It seems that Berliners have never been taught that simple golden rule: Treat others as you wish to be treated - or an even easier version: You catch more flies with sugar than shit.

Actually I talked about this with my flatmate who grew up here. She's actually a nice girl, but obviously as every Berliner she has a full lack of politeness/manners. Her point was that she perceives (and that's probably quite representative for the general mentality up here) being polite as being dishonest, because people usually don't mean it when they're being polite/friendly. What the fornicate is wrong these people??? What is "dishonest" about not treating other people like shit??? I don't even to know how it was to live here before people from either other parts of Germany or abroad started to move here, hopefully gentrification is continuing so Berlin gets rid of its locals, could be a nice city after all
