Cologne people are really friendly and inclusive, make one good friend there and you will get three other good friendships. Hamburg is open and friendly as well, so is Leipzig and Dresden. Don't judge all of Germany by your experience in Berlin. There's a heavy sadness hanging over this city, which is no wonder when you consider the city's history.

Hamburg and Leipzig are supposedly not bad. Munich has a mixed reputation. Maybe a bit too conservative, uneventful, and expensive but also much cleaner and orderly and if you are artistic and not conservative, you may have an easier time clicking with similar people whereas Berlin is a bit overwhelmed with that. Hamburg may be a bit in between in the vibe and people.

The article starts okay but after1st page could be shortened substantially. Besides it misses one important point. People who are incapable of expressing themselves and have no talents become here students. They study something for years (kunst, umweltschutz, you name it), and after they finish they study something again and again, and then they finish at their 30, 35 etc having no networks, stable relationships and job perspectives. Universities are overfilled and cannot offer reasonable schedule, and students wait few semesters to make a stupid course. Look, I cannot imagine a sane and intelligent person studying something like umweltschutz for 7, 8, 10 years. For me this would be a total waste of people's resources, perspectives, lives. In Berlin they do it on a massive scale though. I was once visiting an evaluation of a graduate school program, and remember how professors were proudly talking about their family programs, social activities, women percentages etc. Not a singe comment was done on how fast and where their graduates find jobs. This is a taboo here, people don't talk about jobs because in Berlin there are none. I would love to see once an external audit for all the studiengangs they offer at Berlin universities. But nobody seem to care so far. And then, there is this annoying attitude: somebody should take care of me. People go to universities because somebody will take care of them, enroll to graduate programs because somebody should take care of them. And then they look for a job because somebody should now take care of them. Result is a miserable city with lots of miserable people, lonely, frustrated, aggressive, incapable of doing simple tasks, even they are not appealing sexually. For SW engineering profession , most discussions on US or Europe boils down to cost of living. Germans in particular, think that housing here is cheaper, healthcare is free, and <insert socialist and conformist arguments here>.
I, as a person emigrating from a developing country, have never seen so much overpriced apartments in one place. The quality of a medium sized flat with a medium price (700-1100) is just ridiculous. They either has paper thin walls, or has no insurance whatsoever, or holds mold, or gets no sunlight, or you name it.
On the other hand, if you consider a more decent place, forget about paying less than 1500 euros per month. Only then will you have an isolated (no noise, no peasants), proper flat which is considered the norm rather than the expensive in so called the developing country. If you pay that amount, what happened to the so called low cost of living?? You pay at least 50 percent of the salary to the rent, and the take home savings go little and little if the salary is not 65K.
This place is only for the weak, lazy, and this in need for pittance. No one in their sane mind should plan a future here.
