Someone in my language course mentioned this site, so I thought I'd take a look. Wow, people; what a bunch of losers you are! From the complaints I've read here, it seems you all believe there is some magical city (yet none of you seem to know where it is), where everyone is friendly, apartments are all huge, renovated, cheap and don't require a deposit, fulfilling, challenging and well-paid jobs are handed out like skittles, and you don't even need to know the language, have an ounce of education, social skills or maturity.
You can keep moving from place to place for the rest of your lives; you will not find this eden. On the other hand, for someone willing to learn German, who has some reasonable set of skills, a decent personality and is reliable, Berlin is full of opportunities. It's easier to blame the place, society, your neighbors or strangers on the subway; at the end of the day, some of us are making it. If you aren't, the problem is you - not Berlin (or wherever else you are "escaping" to next).
Make it at €7.00 per hour, what a laugh, are you some kind of high tech guy, try seeing how you go in the real world, or maybe you are a trust fund baby. I've lent people money here who seemed very responsible and honest, but they could never get ahead to pay me back and then lived in shame for not paying their debts, which sunk them even lower. A lot of people here do think it's the=m and not the city, but they find out when it's too late that it is the cities inhabitants that are the problem, but by that time, they've lost themselves.

Congratulations. You just moved to Berlin and are still in the language learning phase. Come back in 3-4 years, when you've worked your way up to C2 and are still the foreigner here despite the fact that you can carry on a technical conversation flawlessly and run circle around the locals in multiple languages, including German. Get back to us when you have to pay for your own apartment, insurance, food and clothing with the standard 1500€ minimum wage job that every foreigner here has. If you can sit on your butt all day, take a few language lessons here and there and not actually interact with the k r a u t s in this country, maybe compare prices to London, New York, Stockholm or Toronto then you probably feel pretty smug right now. Look forward to hearing from you in a few years, though, when you realize that you're going nowhere here because there are about 4 companies in this city that are actually relevant in any way outside of Germany and that they are already filled with k r a u t s with 14 PhD's each.

@OP, For some people it is nice to be able to see that one is not the only one who is encountering insurmountable problems in Berlin. Generally --and especially from Americans, you just hear how f*ckin' great a person's life is especially from the people from the coastal cities. Which is why I prefer discussing Berlin with Germans--who will never fail to explain to you in specific terms why Berlin is total sh*t without a degree of optimism about the future. Also whomever said @OP is looking at the world through rose colored glasses is right. Not sure why people from all of the world keep moving to Berlin that something incredible will happen. This is a city of poor artistic (and dare we say, autistic) people. Prior to the financial crisis it was perfectly OK that the wages sucked and so on because rents were cheap and that 1500 EUR brutto job was enough to have an OK life. Aber nicht mehr. And yes, you will never speak German well enough to satisfy German people. Germans don't even think Swiss people speak good German or Austrians.
For real, Berlin is just full of opportunities! There are just few of them:

And if you think that all those intrinsec qualities will open up some doors for you and you will be able to grow more and more, you clearly have no idea what kind of society you are trying to "integrate" in. Even if you hear on all mainstream media, how tolerant and welcoming german culture is ( or trying to be, everybody knows why that it is being preached to them - low birth rate and its future economical consequences for the big german industries ) you will probably experience subtle racism every day ( if you're lucky and miss out the blatant one). In psychology it's defined as favoring a group over another as part of an unconscious, unexamined process. And you will deal with those kind of things most of the time - in the work environment mostly, but also imp - when you're trying to find a good flat or RELIABLE social groups.
@OP I brought my own opportunities and made plenty of $. In most countries I would be a model citizen. My tax some years was around ~€50k, I never relied on welfare, I spent time learning the language, I made local friends. However, there are only so many times I could take hearing 'go back to your own country' thrown at me by someone who is a no hoper. However, in fairness to them, it is exactly what I did. I now happily pay tax in a country where people say good morning and appreciate my contributions.

OP, I agree with you for the most part and meant to vote you up but accidentally clicked down and there is no way to undo that. This is a place for people to vent and honestly, people have issues in most major cities. People complain all the time about different things about living in London, Paris, New York, Rome, etc. but they don't really have a site like this with all of those complaints concentrated in one spot. There are also clearly some nuts who seem to post on here several times a day, like the person that keeps posting completely unrelated rants about feminists and leftists. They often share English language videos of popular right personalities from the US, so I am not even sure they live in Berlin.

I am OP. You've jumped to some conclusions about my situation here, albeit due to missing details in my post. I have been here since early 2017, but was also an exchange student during high school. Hence, I am adequately familiar with the idiosyncrasies of your average German. I was only in the language school in order to get the Aufenthaltserlaubnis, but just passed the C1 exam last week. I say this only to point out what happens with an effort to actually thrive, rather than just bitterly complain. I just signed a full-time contract with a company here and will start with more than EUR 5,000 / month. Not rich, but not dire. I also have a lovely flat that I have had since arriving. How is this possible? I have a great degree, a good CV and made an effort to associate only with native Germans such that I actually was offered my position through networking. Yes, in this 'destitute land, with no opportunity', I was actually approached with (multiple) job offers. Did I mention, I am also a person of color. According to what you all seem to believe, I should be nearly dead in a gutter; killed by depression and the never ending torrent of Nazi hate.
I understand not everyone is starting with the same advantages, etc. But on the flip side, a defeatist, victimized attitude that is also mixed with a bizarre racism, xenophobia, and anger still makes me confident in my assertion that most of your failures to thrive, whether in Berlin or anywhere else, is much more attributable to personal shortcomings. From an outsider's perspective, looking in on this group/forum/site, the bulk of you seem to embody what's broken in society.

Australia is not that bad if you're very white (like northern Europeans). They still supposedly have an issue with racism if you're not white, especially outside of Sydney and Melbourne. Canada is all right. They are too close to the US, so a lot of people adopt views and talking points based around US issues that Canada may not have nearly as much of a problem with (much better racial integration and income equality, yet some may talk about things as if it's as bad as it is in the US). The biggest issue there is the weather and the rapid rise in cost of living in Toronto and Vancouver. Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in North America yet has a pretty weak job market and lower average salaries than expensive cities in the US. In Europe, if you can find work and don't mind learning Spanish, I hear Spain is pretty awesome for the most part, particularly Barcelona and Madrid. Better weather, friendlier people, better local food, more of a festive atmosphere rather than a very serious and gloomy one, better looking architecture, near beaches, etc.

Had the same scenario. Came to Berlin from UK ( I am from Eastern EU) and got into a job that was nightmare in terms of environment, people etc. Got rid of that quickly after I was bullied that I won’t be successful because EE, not good enough, high expectations etc etc. Got my mental strenght full power and in a week I found a 2x paid job in a international environment where I actually feel appreciated and valued for my skills... Berlin is really full of racist idiots thinking they’re better than everyone else. But they’re not at all.
