I was born in this city and have spent almost all my life living here, so you would think I got adjusted to it at some point: no. I have been feeling uncomfortable here for as long as I can know, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't have any long-term effects on me at all. If you've ever visited another city such as Paris, London, or even anywhere in Scandinavia, you can quickly tell how the general mood is. Where to begin? Is it the "German attitude"? The food? The sour faces? The cold, calculating exactness and strictness? The busy streets and noise? The impoliteness? The lack of decency? The fact that you can't make proper friends? The ill-minded obsession with competition? The ugly architecture and lifeless streets? I could go on for hours, still not the wiser. Now to be fair, compared to a lot of other cities outside of Germany, it's supposed to be pretty stable and secure in fairly many ways: no earthquakes or other natural disasters, pretty solid traffic system, almost everything is secured on a written document, which gives a feeling of security and organization- stuff like that. I am constantly told I should appreciate these things, but that's like telling a bird locked in a golden cage to appreciate the material. In any case, I'm really glad I'm not alone with these feelings, despite being told the opposite many times. I just hope I can get my life together and move out of here as soon as possible, and hope the same for everyone else on this site. Hang in there, and thanks for reading.

I'll be visiting Berlin after leaving there 1year ago. My rules for having a good time is as follows:
1) Dont talk to any Germans.
2)Ignore the stares...and often stare BACK.
3)Only let my non-German friends know Im in town.
4)Decline all meals offered by my German Host.
5)Get to Prague as SOON as possible.
6)Be kind to/Help as many Tourists as possible in English!
7)Never ask a Berliner how they are doing. For it often ruins my f**king mood.

The worst being the people making those comments while they actually LIVE HERE. Fuck!ng hell I get this everyday "what??? You don't like living here? But it is so cool!"
And I'm always like "im not sure we're living in the same city"
In a nutshell, if you aren't a soulless drone addicted to drugs and alcohol, and if you actually value real warm human beings, this place isn't for you.

Berlin is THE worst place in the world. I hate everything about Berlin and Germany. I feel cheated by the cretins who told me it is an amazing city and I'll learn so much! No one freaking tells you jack crap about all the paper work and restrictions and taxes before you arrive! I just hate it so much. I'm currently home visiting for a week but I fly back tomorrow and I just keep crying knowing I have to go back but I have no where else to go. My amazing partner is in berlin so I can't leave but as soon as he's finished uni I'm leaving and taking him with me! I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE! It's nothing more than a shallow dark cesspit. Local people are rude and ignorant, the "expats" are mostly rich hipster kids freelancing as an artist voluntarily living in squalor because it's "cool" but still getting money from daddy back home, or immigrants who look at us women like we are nothing more than a piece of meat there for their sexual entertainment! This city is broken and if I have to live here more than one year I'm going to lose my shit! I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!

And I made the big mistake to sightsee in HELLERSDORF, hoping to find the botanical garden.
That did it. Its so horrid...but,

HANG IN THERE!!! u can do it!! Gind the good!!!

"Ayahuasca has become quite popular in yoga circles and, even though it embarrasses me a little to put these three words together, the "Berlin meditation scene." For late thirtysomething affluent vegans who don't go to clubs anymore and who spend Christmas in India so they don't have to visit their parents, it's about as hip as partner swapping."
I cringe everytime.

They don't understand the principle of meditation and yoga, I go almost daily to a yoga school in Berlin (i used to do it in my home country for 10 years). They keep looking around during the class, to check if someone can do the poses better than they do. They can't understand that yoga certainly is not about competition. They just do it to show off and brag about it. As for veganism, yeah it's amazing to care about animals and be receptive to their suffering, they miss a huge point though, veganism is about compassion, yet they show absolutely no compassion to their fellow human beings that they have no problem to treat like shit.
Useless pieces of crap...

Berlin is a poor, boring, dysfunctional place - in fact it is the place that comes to existence when you re-unify two separated halves: one having been ruled and ruined by Socialists for 40 years, and the other one having been a heavily subsidised (therefore equally inefficient), corruption-ridden outpost of the Western world. Putting the two together certainly won’t get you a positive balance. In the meantime, these conditions have become deeply engrained into every aspect of Berlin’s social, economic, and political existence. Just think of ineffective and inefficient public services, the expectations of entitlement of many Berliners, and its useless political class (I am talking about Berlin’s own politicians here, not the national parliament or federal government). However, it seems that no German politician ever considered that appropriately - instead, they thought making it the capital again was a good idea… Former chancellor Kohl still deserves to get his wheelchair punctured for the epic historical failure he has caused.

Important note to foreigners: Berlin is luckily not reflective of Germany. Go somewhere else (e.g. Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt) to see what this country is all about - and why it is a lovely place to be. Berlin is just a failure in German history, again…

Important note to Berliners: No, you are not living in a great city, certainly not a true world city. You cannot compare yourself to London, New York, Shanghai, or Tokyo - because your city simply cannot compete with these places. While these places are true alpha cities, where future is made, where creativity resides, and where the economy is buzzing, your place is a gamma city at best. Anyone who says the opposite is caught in a misconception trap (read about Plato’s allegory of the cave to understand the philosophical underpinnings of this issue). Yes, your city is cheap - but you know what they say: “Cheap city, cheap people!”

Needless to say, I cannot wait for the moment when I am going to leave this city. I also might write a book: “Berlin - Streets paved with shit”

I just wanted to share this. Why Berlin is not an alpha city. Berlin is a Beta +, although it seems a little overrated because it shares the classification with the likes of Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Montreal. But it also shares it with Cairo and Beirut so what do I know.

I totally get with the posts are anonymous but it's too bad we have no way of getting in touch with each other. I always get the most suspicious looks ever whenever I say that no, Berlin is not cool and that no, I don't like being here. Like I'm the only one in this sh*t city to understand what's really going on. It's impossible to make friends here, or even acquaintances, I am getting lonely and depressed as sh*t. Therefore I think it would actually be awesome to hang out with the people who are expressing their feelings on this website.

What do the germans always f*cking stare at people like this? Don't they know that it's not polite?
I am sick of being stared at like I'm a f*cking strange animal in a zoo.
In any other countries, this sick starring would initiate arguments and fights, but here it's just normal. They stare because they have NO IDEA how to interact with people, they are too f-cking stupid to understand the most simple and basic rules of politness. But wait, to understand this they should be human, to my point of vue they are nothing but disgusting robots.

Normally you expect that being motivated, self-driven, hard working & polite will make you appreciated in many places. This is not the case in Berlin, it's better to be a bum living out of the government than working hard, you only need to be alternative, or an artist, or a DJ.
