Expats, Tourists, Travellers, hip districts, every single bar, restaurant, cafe, all the hyped up berliners who stare at everyone all the time, like they are constantly on some kid of event, and want me to look back, validating their pooping berlin-vibe. Everyone wih a music, box. Street musicians who turn up their amps so my ears burst, all the people who given them money for that. The non existence of free space. Everyone who lives here voluntarily. Everyone who moves here. Everyone who could leave, but doesn't. Every single party goer, pub crawler and fun haver. Each and every start up and artist and gallery and event location. Everything. It would be bad enough, without all the hyped new-berliners, what with no heating in public buildings, freezing tubes & S Bahn that only runs half the time & crazy Taxi drivers trying to run you over, just for fun - but then it would just be a pooping town, full of rude people & cultural clashes that make you go mad. But with that layer of hyperexited berlinophiles, who claim this overcrowded, awful place is the best place to be, and I'm ungrateful to be stuck here with no way out, I wish, daily, and sincere, though I would not do anything to further this happening, but I honestly wish this hell hole would just accidentally be nuked out of exstistence by someone pressing a wrong button somwhere and sending off a long forgotten H Bomb!

It's no real joking, you know what I mean. I was feeling like s.hit the other day. I got back home and I was like ok, that was it, but there was a neighbour with their bike. And I just felt so bugged. She said, can you leave it open quickly? And I got sarcastic: Of course. I felt truly bothered because people don't give a f.uck how you feel, they always talk to you the same way. She wanted to get her bike in the cellar btw. I added I can open the door too! And she still was all goody moody but rather confused about me. She said something like, not needed but not in a serious way and I said Well since I stand here, sarcastically. She tried to catch me I guess in a good way, she said I do that for quite few years, and I brainfarted a yes. Thing is she is older but she looks fit for her age and I just hated how this played out.

Anyway, to the original poster: I haven't, but I know a person, who went to a group, which was quite useful, and I know, there must be many! I am pretty shure, there are enough expats in Berlin by now, who don't speak German, that you can find and English speaking group. Try googling for one? There are also a lot of meet ups (try meet up, or berlin meet up) and though some of these people probably have no great social skills, others may & perhaps they know more about the expat self help infrastructure.. If you do speak German, there must be a lot of different groups & you can try them out. I mean, self help groups are like other organizations & societies - they have websites & information evenings etc. where you can meet the people & get a feeling for the group! Take care of yourself, don't let anything bog you down unduly, especially now & especially in this big, at times rude town! <3
On Saturday, a bunch of aggressive idiots put together a demonstration in Berlin because of limitations of civil freedoms during coronavirus. These people are sick.
Pretty sure you only think the people who were at the protests were "aggressive idiots" because the media is doing its best to portray them that way. Just read Spiegel's reporting on the protests - the only descriptions they offered for the participants were "far-right, anti-vaxxers, conspiracy theorists". It would be weird if people were not protesting against the kinds of draconian and unprecedented limits to personal freedom - even in Germany where most people have opinions that flip flop depending on whatever the government says.

Crazy, how the majority here are talking about "sheeple" and "the government tell us what to think" and think the "protests" were in any way okay! Of course our constitution & law has provisions for a state of emergency, natural catastrohpes, war, insurgencies, or, yes, an epidemic. It's amazing, how all of a sudden, our government shows, that it is people, who matter, after all, not "live as usual" or "economic growth". In case some still don't get it: Covid is more deadly, than the flu, and nearly as contagious, as far as research can tell, so far. It is not a virus like Eobola, that poses the greatest threat, but one, like Corona, that can travel undetected from host to host, and only a fraction will experience a severe illness. This very sick fraction is still a huge number, in total, if corona travels like the flu & infects millions & millions of people. The flu is bad, especialy for elderly or young kids, but it is different, from covid. Covid causes a very severe inflammation & deterioration of lung tissue, differetn from other pneumonia & different from what the flu does. So if the "fraction" - that would be tens of thousands of people, in a country with eighty million inhabitants, get severely ill, they can not all be cared for in the hospitals - and would just die a slow, painful death at home. We don't want this! Hence the shut down. To stop the virus to travel so fast, that so many people get infected at once. If you think, "hell, let a few hunded thousan people die a slow, painful death, who cares, economy & fun are more important" you are just wrong. No civilized state can do that, and still claim there is stuff like "human rights" and "equality". Even if it was only old people, it wouldn't be okay. We would not even have the palliative means, to help them thorugh their struggle - you really want all our grandparents, who built up this country to just suffocate to death, over days, without any painkillers even? so as i likely wont get kaution back can anyone please give me advice on how to leave my rental contract? I have to give two months notice, and so this is about what im paying as kaution. a friend is subletting. do you just call the landlord and tell them whats up, and then just write a notice (without mentioning I wont pay them last two months rent)? I will never live in Germany again, but wondering if this would affect my credit score if I live somewhere else.... also, a friend is staying there now. they cant kick him out wil they?

Yes, you can Abmeldung online. You can google search the link or ask on the berlin reddit or fb groups and someone will lead you in the right direction. If you have no plans to come back... I would personally withhold the last two months rent. THESE LANDLORDS ARE CROOKS. Once they know you aren't in the country anymore, they will not work with you or return your money. Again, you can verify this by reading other people's horror stories. Let your LL know, but feel free to withhold last rents. fornicate them. No, it won't affect your US or international credit report. The Germs wish they had that much power. Lol.
You can skip the last two rent payments, however, this will be deducted from your Kaution. If your Kaution was the usual 3 months rent, you will only get 1/3 of it back. Keep in mind the landlord also has to take care of the Heizkosten and Betriebskostenabrechnung. This might take some time as it legally has to be done by end of 2021 for this year.

Your friend has no contract with the landlord and can be kicked out immediately. Unless the landlord gave you permission to sublet, you are in breach and he can terminate the lease. Him paying you the caution and staying there is bullshit. They will evict his butt or if he is lucky get a new lease with a higher rent and will have to pay the Kaution again. You and he are separate entities and you can’t demand that he get the place. I guess he is not really your friend if you are willing to fornicate him over like that.

I met so many good musicians who lived off their wives' regular salary or were in debt, or lived off welfare. Back then I was under the impression that Germans don't want foreign artists to make it. Why do Germans seem to be extremely sensitive to the smell of anything artificial (air freshener, cleaning supplies, perfume, other cosmetics) but don't seem to notice natural odors at all (sweat, body odor, urine, human excrement)? I can recall many times when I've commented to German colleagues in public about how someone smells horrible (the kind of smell that lingers in supermarket aisles for minutes after the offender has left) only to be met with confused looks and claims they smell nothing. But if I clean my desk at work with disinfectant they always complain. Are their olfactory senses completely ruined from living in these medieval hygiene conditions in Germany? Even well-dressed people here often smell horrible and have visibly greasy hair.

Or how about the person taking a shower every day but being internally ill, just like having some cancers etc? Eventhough they might use shower gel , body lotion, Deodorant, they will smell badly, because some of the odours happen for a destroyed body chemistry, alternated metabolism. Even if you are catching a virus and getting ill (no matter if SARS CoV 2 or any other) you will smell different.

God, working in Germany is just NOT FUN. No jokes, no humour, no social bonding. You are expected to work like a drone. Also, my office is full of smart butts with limited life experience or any work experience outside of their very narrow field of expertise, constantly trying to outsmart each other and make others look incompetent. All this without doing any ACTUAL WORK. It's always about keeping up appearances and LOOK smart, not actual producing smart results.
God the water in Berlin is so disgusting! I swear the disgusting water and the weather are the two top reasons I have to get out. And I'm sure it's gotten worse since the shutdown, I wouldn't be surprised if they are skipping some steps of whatever water treatment they do.

I am not joking. Germany recycles the toilet poop and pee water in house water. Google it. They truly believe that their chemicals work. A couple years ago they have found so much estrogen and medicals in the water it was crazy. No media talked about it.
A couple of months ago they were debating whether they'll be forced to install new mechanical filters to remove heart medications that are everywhere in the water because of the aging population. And the thing about estrogen is true since pretty much every female in this country goes on the pill at age 14 and stays on it until she reaches menopause. Don't know if other big cities are ever able to source water only from rivers/aquifers but yeah, the water quality in Berlin is definitely terrible. Mention it to any German and you will be met with a screeching retard who will say either 1. GERMAN WATER QUALITY IS THE BEST IN EUROPE, or 2. KALKHALTIGES WASSER IST GUT.
Fun fact: 4 or 5 years ago the government finally got around to updating pipes that go from the main connectors on the street to individual apartment buildings and homes. Up until that point they were still often made of lead and other heavy metals. There still is no law that makes it illegal to have lead pipes WITHIN apartment buildings and homes.
Oh, and speaking of lead exposure - Germans didn't outlaw the sale of melting lead on New Years until two or three years ago. You know, where people sit around and melt lead on spoon and pour it into water. Look up the symptoms of childhood lead exposure and try NOT to imagine your average German while reading them.
