I just don't get it. Norway announced they're not allowing anyone in the country unless they self-quarantine for 14 days (except people from other Scandinavian countries!). The EU didn't make an official statement about it. Haven't heard anyone at work talking about it. Only even found it in the news by reading every story about travel restrictions I can find. If Germans want to hold the US to a higher standard than they hold themselves then they should at least admit that they see their own country as inferior. German smugness is such an off-putting trait.

You have to live 20 years beyond retirement to just break even on what you pay in (not even taking inflation into account). The average will never see even that and it's robbery in plain sight. Berlin is going to be really really bad, in comparison to most other places in Germany. It doesn't help that this city always seemed to attract a lot of people fleeing responsibilities (whether they were justified or not) as well as "Nach mir die Sinnflut"-Hedonism which will cause a lot of troubles for everybody involved. In my opinion, everybody who can afford should leave Berlin while they still can. The medical system is going to collapse really soon, there is a real threat of social unrest and the population density mixed with horrible hygiene habits will explode real soon. This is not fear-mongering, but a realistic assessment of the situation.

Listened to a radio segment with a dr from Charité about the virus a few days ago. He basically said that Germany is trying to stagger the cases of the virus so that the whole healthcare system doesn't collapse like in Wuhan, and he's hoping young people don't start to get it in huge numbers until summer. He didn't say they're under reporting deaths but I think it makes sense. The entire media here is saying it's "just another flu" and ridiculing preppers for buying up canned goods and flour. Of course they'd massively downplay deaths - what choice do they have? The only down side is that you can't do that for long and soon there will be thousands of dead 60-80 year olds. Germans smugly think to themselves only 2 people have died because of their "superior" healthcare system but don't forget this: The annual flu death rate in Germany is 10% higher than in the US where people are much more likely to just tough it out without dr supervision. Critical mass will be reached soon.
I hate how smoking is so normalized here. I can't hang out with anyone outdoors because within 2 minutes they're lighting up and blowing disgusting smoke in my face. I hate smelling smoke on so many people- and yes, smokers, we non-smokers can actually smell it on you from 5m away when you think you're clean- you goddam fuckking stink!! I hate walking outside on a nice day and smelling so many smoke clouds. I hate going to a cafe only for the employee to hang around the door for a cigarette break and send all their smoke back inside where I'm sitting. In the US we outlawed smoking to protect employees. In Berlin they're supposedly sooo worried that no employee ever work on a Sunday but nobody cares if they have to suffer secondhand smoke from customers. People have known for decades that smoking is bad for you; this is just another way that Berlin is deliberately trying to be grungy and behind the times.
Also I hate getting headaches from some junkie's heroin smoke in the Ubahn stations. It's happened a few times that I'm on the platform and there is a sickening sweet smoke, I get dizzy and look around and there are some fuckers lighting up on tinfoil right there in full view. Well in the US the lawmakers were also smart enough to make it illegal to smoke directly in front of buildings opened to the public as well. For my part smoking doesn't bother me that much here except at home in summer when it's 30 C and no aircon so you HAVE to open a window and some idiot smokes all darn day.
