Buchpreisbindung is stupid. It's basically a government-imposed cartel on book pricing in Germany (that thankfully doesn't apply to books from foreign publishers YET, but that's not the point). Basically every book published in Germany is required by law to be sold for a specific price set by the publisher. Only after 2 years are book sellers allowed to lower the price. But sometimes they'll purposely damage books to sell them for cheaper (you'll see 20 copies with a Mängelexemplar sticker). The system encourages publishers to re-release books every two years with trivial addendums.
But the worst part of the system is thay they claim it is to protect smaller book sellers. Well how many independent book stores have you seen in Germany? Almost none, and the few that do exist are so cheaply outfitted you wouldn't want to spend a minute longer than necessary there.
Also considering the fact that publishers sell their books to book sellers at a discount, it doesn't protect anything. Especially in a world with Amazon that can negotiate bigger discounts than any other seller on earth.
And this thing is so heavily enforced it's ridiculous. A few years back the government fined Meinpaket.de because they allowed people to use discount codes on books. Now all other websites seem to be scared as hell of violating this dumb law.

Casually mention that you think free market prices, like in basically every other country on earth, are superior. And then watch Germans get mad because they can't list off a single advantage to this dumb system.
German here and I am disappointed in the undifferentiated opinions on this website. Was everything here written by one person? All my friends think Germany is great. My foreign friends at uni also say Germany is number 1. We have the strongest female leaders (Frau Merkel and Frau Von der Leyen) ever. We are a role model to the worls and especially the EU. Maybe we are too direct for you spoiled anglo-americans, but everyone I know says this is a good trait. Germans are definitely not assholes. Maybe it's true that in Germany you earn about 20% less than you would in USA but I am happy to earn less and in exchange never have to worry that I will have difficulties in live.
If you hate Germany so much then get out, we do not need you here. All the Syrians I know are grateful to be here unlike you rude foreigners. We only need good foreigners here who love the way German society is.

^ I suspect so too. But in case he/she isn't, I'll make some observations of my own. I befriended a Syrian guy when I was in Germany and he is thoroughly unimpressed with Germany and has tolerated their crap for the last four years. I know plenty of other foreigners who feel the same way.

You must be kidding right? Merkel and Von den Leyen have been total disasters for not only Germany, but Europe as well. They are both living proof that you don't have to be good at what you do to go up the chain in Germany. Both are immoral and incompetent by any reasonable measure. You should understand that their is a difference between been direct and being a complete male genitalia when it's not needed or warranted. Most Germans who have been abroad (and never come back) actually understand this. Although inviting refugees into one's country seems a kind act, I can't help but think that the Germans and their sad excuse for leadership have done all of this for their own over-inflated egos. I have to wonder how one can live without difficulties here when wages are often poor and the government takes up to half your pay from you. It can really only be viewed as theft. And you're all happy with this?

LOL yes it's bare minimum land and I noticed this the minute I landed at Tegel and saw that they don't even have jetways leading from the plane to the terminal. Then it was further confirmed when I saw how many people they squeeze into the buses that go from the plane to the terminal. Even more when I used the bathroom and it smelled horrible as if it had never been cleaned and never got any fresh air. And then, of course, when I saw how completely messed up the airport design is where people have to queue in the middle of walkways and sit on the floor. I thought to myself that this surely couldn't be the Germany I had been told about.
As I German let me tell you that most of the things written on this site are incorrect. Germany is a clean country and in my 24 years living here I have never seen someone peeing in public. We are not ,,worst-case thinker", we are just realists. That is why Germany is so successful (we are the export champions of the world, our education system is the best (our Pisa scores are only bad because the students were told the test does not count), best healthcare, best welfare system).

Berliners are really stupid. Any time I criticise anything here they always either pretend I am lying or say "it's like that everywhere". Wages aren't ubiquitously low everywhere. I had to buy some wine quickly in my lunch break for a friends birthday party later that day, and so I was in a rush. I went into a random spaeti and had a look at their pathetic section of chilled alcoholic drinks, took a photo, then stood outside the shop and sent pic to my friend so we could decide which one we wanted as we would be drinking it later at the party (so far so usual right??). Then the two Russian/German sheep women working there come out and ask me in german why I am taking a photo. I explained and even showed them the photo. Both of them HAD to correct me saying "you need to ask before you take a photo" (translated). Ummm had I not been pushed for time I would have left and bought it elsewhere, but I looked incredulously at these jobs-worth prigs and thought... this culture/you people... just are so clueless about customer service. Here is a potential customer about to buy one of your more pricey products and you treat them like that... you condescend and school the potential customer, rather than saying would you like some help. Yes maybe I should have asked... but surely it was obvious why I am taking a pic. Also, since when was it against the book of manners to take a photo of some sparkling wine? a german lecturing an englishman on manners is quite laughable. When you people learn to queue like respectable people, to use basic etiquette like please and thank you and learn not to push and shove... or to say excuse me when someone is accidentally in your way... to name but a few examples... Not in the case with high income Asians. Suchs as Singaporites, Hong Kong Residents even the Japanese. Alot of Anglo Indian couples are high net worth in the UK including my parents and many friends of mine are mixed race and make way more which doesnt result in crime.
